Hi Mike. My rear cylinder is leaking at the base again for the 3rd time in the same spot. I have about 2000 miles since the dealer did the 0905 enhancement. They replaced the cylinders, pistons and rings when they did the enhancement because I was complaining about a knocking noise between 2500-3300 rpms. The new parts fixed the piston slap but like I said it is leaking again. The dealer talked to Harley about this leak problem and HD wants them to pull the rear cylinder and check the cases. If the cases look good they want the dealer to put a sealant around the O-Ring and put the engine back together.

I am looking for some advise here. 1) I've been told you can remove the cylinders with the pistons in them. Is this true, and if so is there any advise you can give me to pass on to the dealer? The dealer wants to just pull the cylinder and than replace it since the rings have only 2200 miles on them. My problem with this is the first time they fixed the gastket leak the bike had 5000 miles on it and they just pulled the cylinders and replaced them on the same rings. I had alot of oil carry-over after they did this. Right now I have no oil carryover and the engine has no piston noise. 2) The rear cylinder leaks at the left rear base corner up the left side about half way and to the rear past where the cases spit. I has always leaked in this spot. Have you ever seen this before? If so what should we do? 3) This seems like a patch job to me at best. What is your opinion? I hate for them to tear down my engine again since it is quiet and no oil carry-over problems.

Some cases were machined with a very slight step where cylinder base sits. A small amount of silicone sealant on the cylinder o-ring and base seals this well. We've done this on some bikes with no problems. This would not require replacing the cylinders and so not the rings either. I would simply seal and reinstall without disturbing the ring rotation on the the pistons.

Can the cylinders be removed with the pistons in them? If so are there any tricks to doing this? I am just a little worried because of the last time they did this I had the oil carryover. Thanks for your help Mike.

It can be done but is very awkward. I prefer to lift the cylinders off the pistons taking special care not to disturb the ring positions.
