I bought a wrecked 2001 Dyna FXDWG (http://picasaweb.google.com/rodwgregg/2001DynaWideglide#) a few weeks ago not knowing if I was going to rebuild the bike or what, all I did know is it was a Harley Davidson with a clean title and in need of a home and some TLC.
I've never had the opportunity to work on my 02 Deuce other than simple little things so figured this would be if nothing else a good bike to take apart and lean from.
Since I'm a body man by trade I am drawn to wrecked things and enjoy fixing and putting them back on the road. I have a lot of serious catching up to do learning about the twin cam engines and how the bikes are put together now. I've been wrenching on Shovel Heads for me and my friends since I was out of hi school, now is my chance to build a Twin Cam bike.
I'm probably nuts for starting this project but here I go, I've been shopping for parts on line mostly and being very careful not to spend any more than I have to, I sure don't want to be in the bike more than its worth when I'm done with it.
The engine took the majority of the hit right on the compensator and engine nut. Of course this destroyed the engine and transmission cases and bent the power shaft on the engine among other things.
I picked up a good used OEM transmission and several other part and have been cleaning up the bike the best I can when I find the time.
I'm still not sure what to do with the engine cases and flywheels?
This is where I'm getting confused which way to go?
do I replace the cases with OEM from Harley? around $800
by aftermarket cases from S&S for $1569.00
or spend the time and effort to see if any reputable shop could repair the broken cases? (http://picasaweb.google.com/rodwgregg/2001DynaWideglide#5252724666646162066) Living in Central Oregon my choices for finding a shop to do this kind of repair is limited.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
BTW this is great fun :D

I'm gaining :)
the engine is back in the frame with the new cases from Harley. I would have had the cams and cam chest built but got burned on ebay trying to purchase a set of used cams {the guy sent me worn out parts} so waiting for more cams to be shipped. [/URL]I installed 95 pistons and barrels and had the heads machined .020 other than the SE air cleaner and pipes the bike will be pretty much stock. Thanks for taking a look!

Well I ran in to a snafu while fitting the inner primary to the engine transmission cases!
It seems the drive train is to low, causing the inner primary to contact the lower frame rail just below the engine. I have all the isolators and mounts loose and lifting the assembly up but still not enough clearance.
I did not replace the isolator mounts but will start there, I was going to replace the mounts until I priced them { kind of spendy} and figured they would be ok.
I am also going to re-check the frame for more damage that may cause this condition? It all looks good but it wouldn't take much to cause this.
Any one have a frame jig and the capabilities to measure this dyna frame?

Got her done:hooray
The 95 cu in with the 203 cams runs great.
Rides straight as an arrow, I couldn't be more pleased with the project.
I had to build a frame mount to fasten the bike to our frame rack, then the pulling much was easier.
Now I want to build another one!
