I bought a wrecked 2001 Dyna FXDWG (http://picasaweb.google.com/rodwgregg/2001DynaWideglide#) a few weeks ago not knowing if I was going to rebuild the bike or what, all I did know is it was a Harley Davidson with a clean title and in need of a home and some TLC.
I've never had the opportunity to work on my 02 Deuce other than simple little things so figured this would be if nothing else a good bike to take apart and lean from.
Since I'm a body man by trade I am drawn to wrecked things and enjoy fixing and putting them back on the road. I have a lot of serious catching up to do learning about the twin cam engines and how the bikes are put together now. I've been wrenching on Shovel Heads for me and my friends since I was out of hi school, now is my chance to build a Twin Cam bike.
I'm probably nuts for starting this project but here I go, I've been shopping for parts on line mostly and being very careful not to spend any more than I have to, I sure don't want to be in the bike more than its worth when I'm done with it.
The engine took the majority of the hit right on the compensator and engine nut. Of course this destroyed the engine and transmission cases and bent the power shaft on the engine among other things.
I picked up a good used OEM transmission and several other part and have been cleaning up the bike the best I can when I find the time.
I'm still not sure what to do with the engine cases and flywheels?
This is where I'm getting confused which way to go?
do I replace the cases with OEM from Harley? around $800
by aftermarket cases from S&S for $1569.00
or spend the time and effort to see if any reputable shop could repair the broken cases? (http://picasaweb.google.com/rodwgregg/2001DynaWideglide#5252724666646162066) Living in Central Oregon my choices for finding a shop to do this kind of repair is limited.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
BTW this is great fun :D
