Mike,

I have a 2008 Soft tail custome with only 50 miles on it. The bike does not have a tach. on it. Whats the best way to make sure you dont exceed the magic 4500 RPM mark while I'm breaking it in

Mostly by feel! If you feel the bike is being forced or struggling at any point then lower the revs and or downshift. Runing the bike at rpm's and loads that feel easy or "happy" for the motor will give good results. Know that lugging or runing at rpm's too low is equally bad. With the piston cooling jets and other features these bikes are pretty bullet proof. Brief accidental excursions outside the break-in rpms will not cause damage or ill effects.
