Hello Mike
my wife has a 2007 Sportster 1200L and she's installing a Stage 1 kit: Street Performance Mufflers (80503-07) and Air Filter (29782-07). She also needs a fuel management system. No other engine mods are planned.
We were planning about a SE Race Fueler (32173-07), but it seems many people have had issues with EFI Sportsters and SERF. A local dealer has solved these issues by "eliminating" the O2 sensors (I'm not sure about the meaning of this). As far as I know, SERF is the "official" HD route for EFI Sportster, and there is no mention to O2 sensor elimination from HD.
What do you think?
Do you have any other suggest (remapping? Techlusion? Power Commander? I don't consider the SERT a viable alternative because of $$$ compared to the mods involved). We liked the idea of the SERF because it's relatively cheap, it's the official HD solution, it's easy to install. But I know that many people had to have it removed because of several issues.... and this is quite scary.

Thanks a lot for your kind reply.

I'll have to check but a cal should be available on Digital Technician for this combo.

The correct cal is available on Digital Technician, part number 22718-07DT. This would be the correct and recommended ("official") approach for your combo. No other device required.

Mike
wow thanks a lot!!!!
I wonder why dealers are reluctant to explain things.

Just a couple of questions:

- Pollution & Noise issues: I guess the bike after mufflers, a/c and remap does not comply to regulations. So what happens if the bike must have a pollution and noise test (after 4 years since purchase it is compulsory down here)? I can easily remove mufflers and a/c, but what about the remap? Do I have to have it remapped to "stock" and then back to Stage 1 after test?

- So you don't suggest the SERF... Generally speaking, I used to think that such a device would have done a better job than a remap. Really, you wouldn't ever take into consideration the SERF for this setup?

- Will the engine run cooler at Stage 1 status, rather than stock?

Thanks - Thanks - Thanks

Unfortunatly, I cannot answer the questions regarding noise and emmisions as this varies from place to place. You'll have to confir with your local dealer as to the possibilities. The 50 state legal mufflers are compliant but may not be so when used with the air cleaner kit and calibration for same.

The bikes do tend to run cooler with these mods. How much so depends on how ridden.

I'm a huge SERT fan but it is simply not required for your proposed combo and would add a fair cost. If you have plans for future further upgradse (cams, heads, aftermarket exh, etc.) then the SERT would become the recommendation as this would allow for your current changes and those in the future. It does allow for more changes and custom tuning to address individual owners issues than a reflash calibration. Of course, the Pollution and Noise questions should be answered before doing so.
