Mike,

I would like to know if you have any suggestions on how you should break in a bike with 12 miles on it. What should I avoid as far as RPMs or MPH? I hear two different ways of breaking the bike in. One is to drive it normal and the other is to vary the RPMs for the first 500 miles. What is your position on break in.

Vary the rpms. Do not lug the motor, do not run at steady upper rpm's, completely close the throttle often allowing the motor to slow under its own power and do not rev to high rpm's. Picture going up and down low hills adding throttle as you climb (loading the rings) and coasting down the other side with the throttle closed (cooling the pistons).

How many miles should I do this, or is it a certain period of time.

First 75 are the most critical. The next benchmark is 500 miles. After that, you can be more generous with the load and rpm's up to 2500. Motors can continue to break in for as much as 3500 but as far as preventing damage, the 500 mark is it.

Thanks Mike.....One last question, when you say do not run at high RPMs or steady at high RPMs, what RPM would that be?

4500+
