Hey Mike, I have a 1996 Ultra Classic fuel injected bike and am trying to figure out how to get a little more top end performance out of it. I am being told that there are limited performance upgrades to choose from for this model without spending a whole lot of money. Can you make any suggestions that won't break the bank. I already have a Fuel Pak and Kirker Mufflers on it. Thanks in advance, BK (MI)
The injection system may require and ECM change to allow use of tuning devices such as Power Commander or Direct Link and the newer Red top injectors required for perforamnce upgrades (even mild ones). Many of these bikes have been changed already. The newer ECM can be identifyed by it's "wedge" shape. The ealier style was completely square and equal thickness on all sides. Early injectors were black in color and these were used with both style ECM's. Even with the newer ECM tuning can be an "adventure" with these systems and many shy away for this reason alone. With the newer ECM, you can go with a cam change, possibly some head/piston work but one of the above tuners will be required. The Fuel Pak will not be adequate. Last, we would want to be sure all sensors and the ISC motor are in good working order and properly set. Because of the age of the bike , many of these may have to be changed or adjusted. Finding a tuner that can properly set these and tune can be a challenge. More likely to find one proficiant with Power Cmdr than other products. Another avenue is to replace the entire system with the Zippers/thundermax kit. Specificaly designed for your application and allows for many more performance options. This would be my recommendation because tuning issues will be less problematic. Either way it's not enexpensive.
