Help Mike! 2000 FXD speedo went erratic and has quit working, except for very intermittently. I brought up the codes, and D01 & D08 need to be set every time I clear them and run the motorcycle. Having had previous experience with metal on Hall sensor that was the first thing I looked at. There was no metal. So, I (reluctantly!) go to page 8-114, the speedo test 2B chart. I split the "under the seat" connector for the Hall sensor and read 12V on the red wire. I check the ground on the black wire, and it's good. I check for 12V & 1V on white wire while rotating gear teeth past Hall sensor, it's OK. I check the power and ground at the speedo connection (39A/B) - they are OK. I casually look at spark plug cables and then chart takes me to "replace speedometer." Get new speedo ($270!) and this doesn't cure problem. I notice that the boot on the front plug wire is damaged from hand shift lever. I replace spark plug cables and problem persists. I remove Dakota Digital speedo correction box from Hall sensor circuit and see that that it is not the problem. For some reason I suspect the Hall sensor, and will test its switching on and off again. Do you have any ideas before I replace the Hall sensor?? By the way, I enjoyed AmIron article!

The AIM bike should have made 10 more hp dammit!!! Oh, sorry got off on a tangent. Sounds like a connection problem that may be intemittant and shows itself when the bike is running/vibrating/shaking. Ground checks sometimes read good even though the wire may only have one strand intact but will not carry a load when voltage is applied while running. Could still be the VSS but would be looking at all connections to the speedo with special attention to grounds. Since this is not really a do-it youreself forum, beyond this I'll have to recommend visiting your local dealer.
