Is there any benefit of running V&H true duals and stock 2007 mufflers on my 2007 FLHX? Perfer better and usable torque curves verses high RPM horsepower. It seems like the factory exhaust is more or less a 2:1 pipe anyway with only ~20% coming out the left pipe and ~80% exhaust coming from the right pipe from the Y-pipe split/baffling.

Single diameter true duals have routinely given us less hp/tq than the stock heads pipes with good slips (or the same slip-ons). We do a modification to the stock "y" pipe to remove a restriction and this helps. Stepped true duals will give higher numbers but typically have a significant torque dip aorund 2.5krpm. If you take the Rhineharts (for example) and install their quiet or small baflle the torque dip is improved tremendously at the cost of some high end hp. Bottom line is that these motors do not like 6 feet of 1 3/4 head pipe, the stepped designs make the motor think the exh is shorter (technically not correct but that is the net effect). The exh split is more like 10/90%. So in the end, just the V&H slip-ons with stock head pipes would be the better choice.

thanks for the info. Sounds like I should just get a good 2:1 pipe instead of going the true duals or slip-on route. Had good torque curve with Supertrapp 2:1 in the past with my 00 Road King and Confederate GT. Just have to decide between the Supertrapp 2:1 or your highly regarded D&D Fat Cats.

Have you had any experience with the black ceramic coating of these pipes?

Would you have any RT maps for the Supertrapp 2:1 or Fat Cats with the 07 motor w/K&N filter?

thanks in advance

The coating helps keep heat in the pipe which in theory helps scavenging but mostly done for looks. We actually experimented with ceramic coating the inside of pipes to improve performance but the results proved to be less than the dyno resolution. I'll check our files for the SERT map.
