Hi MIke:

I enjoy your site very much and hope you can answer a couple of questions I have on exhaust. I use to have a 1994 Harley Classic that I added Sampson slip-ons to and I really liked them and never had a problem with. In 2005 I bought a fuel injected Roadking and the dealer talked me into putting on Reinhart pipes. They were ok for 6 months and then I started getting huge backfires every time when starting. Went back to Harley and they told me they found out the Reinhart pipes weren't compatable for this bike and for another 600 buck they could correct the problem. When I purchased the bike I told them to do everything neccessary so I would not have any problems. They said what they did was a generic download at time of purchase. I got so fed up with argueing with Harley I sold the Roadking and am now the owner of 2006 Harley Classic.. Everything on the bike is stock and would like to get good sounding pipes and a little better performance.

Every bike shop I go to I get a different story. Some say slip-ons a ok, some say I need a power commander, Vance and hines says i need a fuel pak with their pipes, some say i need headers and pipes, or true dual's. I really liked the Sampson's i had before.

Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. I don't won't to make another mistake like i did with the Roadking. If I need the full system I'll buy it, power commander same thing.

Thanks for your time

The Rush slip-ons may be a good choice but should have either Race Tuner or Power Commander installed to correct tuning. If you stay with the H-D 50 state legal slip-ons you can use an H-D recal. download. Your original problem with the Rhineharts may have been a crack at the rear head pipe to starter motor support tab. If you go with the Vance and Hines pipes then the Fuel Pak will work very well as it is matched for their exh.

The V&H do not require the Fuel Pak, a power commander or SERT will work equally as well. It's just that when their pipes are used with the Fuel pak, you have a unified plug and play package (no dyno time required, matched components). We would recommend the SE air cleaner kit for the added performance. It's the air-in/air-out thing.
