Mike,

Hope you can help shed some light on the set-up that my dad had installed on his 2004 Ultra Classic.

He went with a configuration that one of the local HD dealers suggested/installed.

95" big bore
203 cams
high compression pistons
adjustable push-rods
Power Commander (PCII)
compression releases
Screamin' Eagle air filter
Samson 'oval' exhaust
-
no head-work
factory 'fuel' map

The configuration seems a bit odd to me...but does provide excellent performance...the problem is, the dealership is all but refusing to install a stage I or stage II download. With the added power available, it would be nice to have the extra RPM's that the stage I & II offer...but they (the HD dealer) want to charge for re-tuning. Now, we did ask that the stage II be installed @ the time the work was done - but the dealership refused (well...maybe didn't refuse..but gave enough of a fight that my dad just gave-up the fight).

I'm sure that I am not including enough information...but can you see how there is some frustration?

Any input/suggestions/questions?

I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions on the phone today.

As I told you, the local HD shops here in St Louis don't seem to have nearly the level of expertise (not to mention willingness to spen time) as you and your team. Your input was greatly welcomed - and (for what it's worth), 'Team Latus' will be at the top of my list for any & all of my bike needs from here on out...

Customer Service plays a big part in my decision making process when I am making a purchase...and I could tell in the short time that we talked - that your team has customer service down to a science.

Thanks again, and if you have any other idea's on the Ultra Classic we discussed, I'll be checking back on the forum frequently.

I know we talked on the phone but I'll reply for the benefit of others. Many dealers/shops have their own formula that is working for them and may not want to get into unknown terrritory because of added cost to the customers, for example. We recommend the closest H-D download with the PC so that the PC values are not as great, to take advantage of the other table changes in addition to the raised RPM limit (like warmup fuel, cranking fuel, tuning constants, etc.), and to provide a rideable bike in case the PC fails (not common but can happen). We believe the added cost of $149.95 is worth these advantages, thats just how we do it. We also, almost always custom map the bikes we build so the added cost is typically part of the build estimate and the owners are prepared for it.

We would have went with the 211 cams but we also have dense Pacific air here, so pinging issues tend to be more severe. H-D does not have an exact calibration match to our (or yours) combo, so we would want to custom map but we would start with the H-D cal that most closely matchs the combo as a base to ltune from whether with a PC or SERT.
