Hey guys,

This may sound like a silly question, but I would rather ask for suggestions than have to buy more parts if I screw it up.

I am in the process of rebuilding a 1999 Road King that was involved in a minor accident. All of the work is done, and the last part that I need was picked-up this morning - and installing it has me more nervous than all of the mechanical work that I did.

The part I am referring to is the emblem that goes onto the fuel tank. I ordered OEM Harley emblems from an '07 Road King 'custom' and need to put them on.

Is there any type of template that your team uses? or is there any way to make sure that the emblem(s) are alligned correctly & matching on either side of the tank? I have seen several instances where someone has an emblem mis-aligned just enough to be noticeable, and I do not want to fall into the same trap. My attention to detail borders on obsessive, and I know that it will drive me crazy if I screw-up something this simple after all fo the work that I have done. I am also concerned that if I do put one of these on crooked - that I'll have to drop another $70 to replace it, and also run the risk of screwing-up my new paint.

- - - I know that you can use a 'water/soap' mixture when applying decals so that there is time for proper positioning of the decal - can the same be done with the 3m backed OEM emblems? Maybe spray the 'soap/water' mixture on the tank - then position the emblem and use masking tape to secure it in place while the mixture evaporates?

Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

HD has no instructions for applying emblems and they are all over the place on stock bikes. Talked to our painter and he just "eyeballs them", he's pretty good at it. Best thing you can do is apply masking tape to the metal and mark with reference points.
Thanks, Mike

Thanks Mike -

I know that this was not the proper forum for this question...but in reading the replies that you give in your (within) area of expertise...I assumed that you would give me a 'qualified' answer.

I appreciate the response...

peace.

This forum takes all questions, no worries. Someone later suggested having a local auto body shop apply them.
