Hi
I am running a stock 00 FXSTS with V&H straight shots & Ness 90 degree air cleaner. All in all the bike works quite well, stock cv rejetted. I have purchased HSR42 carb. What cam would give the best bang for the buck with other stock components & compression? Our nearest HD dealer recommended the se211. I think duration & intake valve closing at 42 would kill low end. I am considering the S&S510. Will the cam change make a very noticable change or feel in acceleration? Do you have a better choice? Or, should I wait to go 1550 etc. Also have V&H long shots. Which makes best all round, stagered straight shot or long shot?

Any advice GREATLY appreciated

The 211's are a good choice ONLY if you also raise the compression. You are correct in that with stock compression the bike will run lazy at low rpm's. If you are going to raise the compression, then may as well go to the 1550 pistons since, labor wise, it will only be the cost difference of the pistons and cylinder boring. This is the kit featured in American Iron Magazine Aug/Sept 06. For a stock 88ci and stock compression the Andrews 26a, 37b, SS 510, Crane 310 and HeadQuarters 34 have all worked well. The gains are good but not earth shattering. The straight shots will do better with the cam install vs long shots.
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike
Thanks for the info. I have decided to go to se hicomp cast pistons with 1550 bore, also 211 cams. What kind of hp/tq increase would be expected with this. Would I feel much over my existing combo? With this cam & compression raised would comp releases be recommended? Can stock valve springs be used? I would also consider mild head porting to stock heads. Like most, I am looking for the best bang for the buck. Any other recommendations re cam choice etc?
Thanks Again

The 1550 hi-comp pistons are a very good match for the 211's. This is our "Boss" kit featured in American Iron Magazine Aug/Sept 06. If you are considering some head porting then you can add a little more cam with more lift to take best advantage of the heads since they can be setup for these cams, the 251's are our choice in the SE line. Other cams are options depending on riding style, bike type, gear drive ,etc.

The 211's do not require valve springs or compression releases in a 95ci/10.25 application. The 251 cams require spring kits in 04E models (pre-"beehive" valve springs). With the 211's, expect 88-92hp/100-105tq (5th gear, 250i dyno, STD correction) with optimized exhaust. The Vance and Hines your are running will require baffle mods to achieve these numbers but with a corresponding torque dip. See our "211" section under "dyno charts" on this web forum for examples of 211 kitted bikes with a variety of exhaust's.

Hi Mike
One concern regarding 10.25:1 comp. Will I run in to detonation problems on pump premium? I am still running stock ignition, which I understand has a fairly aggressive advance.

Not with the 211 or 251 cams, when properly tuned. Matching compression to cam is extremely important, the very thing that makes these cams lazy with 9:1 compression is what allows us to increase compression to 10.25 without fear of detonation. I do recommend an adjustable ignition for carbureted bikes so that we can tune and optimize the advance curve for these combo's and have the ability to tune out any detonation if it does happen.

Hi Mike
Thankyou for all the excellent advice! I have very much enjoyed your site. The dyno charts have been great for reference, not to mention the other articles. Mike, have a wonderful Christmas and all the best for you and your family!
Best Regards Greg
