hello mike

I have a few questions I have a 2006 se fatboy with 2,000 miles got it in October all stock right now. I was wondering if this combo will work? my local hd shop mechanic picked the parts so I would like to have another thought on this. well here it is se 18344-05 valve spring kit se 18562-02 tappets se-251 cam kit cometic head gaskets .030" se 80093-03 tunable 2 into 1 exhaust zipper's 117-296 filter upgrade will send heads out to clean them up he states no work has been done yet.

also should I change the oil pump and cam plate or just use the stock ones with the lmr-002 spring.
should I go with gear drive and get rid of the chain also what gear drive would you suggest.

sorry for so many questions any help would be great.

thanks Ron

would come to you but I live in ma or do you know any shops in the Springfield area.

thanks

Mike

Sorry, do not know any shops in Ma.! We've had very good luck with the 251 cams in mildly ported ("cleaned up") heads. We do however, also increase compression to 10.25 to 1 with these cams. Your cylinder head guy can deck the heads and use the .030 gasket to achieve the 10.2:1 comp (95ci). The amount to deck form the heads can vary depending on what is done as part of the work on the heads. If the compression is not increased to match the cam timing the bike may run lazy at low rpms (2-4k) with a low restriction exhaust.

The Zippers upgrade is very good (requires the SE 29440-99D air cleaner kit), so long as leg clearance is not an issue due to the increased width. Great exhaust choice. The stock oil pump and cam plate are fine for this application. Our LMR spring will increase oil pressure by 15% and help keep valve train noise down with the higher pressure valve springs and cam lift. We use them with all cam installs (of course we make it, so!!!!) . The stock springs in your heads will accomodate the added lift of the 251's but your head guy will know best what works with his combo's. We use stock lifters with nearly all of our builds, less problems than with more expensive stuff, but should be replaced with a cam change. Upgrading to the SE's would be fine.

Gear drive cams will add $400.00+ to the build cost and have the potential for greater engine noise. But they do eleminate the possibility of cam tensioner/chain failures and have more stable valve control when high pressure valve springs are used. If you do go gear drive, look for cams that have similar timing and lift specs to the 251's. Some good choices with 10.0-10.5:1 compression are S&S 570 (complete kits), Red Shift 575, Crane 290's, T-man 600 or Knightprowler TW6H. Your larger engine size may want to lean towards cams with more duration vs. less, from this group. Thanks, Mike

Hello Mike

Thanks for your quick reply. I called your shop today and ordered the LMR-002 spring very friendly people on the phone can not remember the name (female). I was wondering what cylinders and pistons come stock in the CVO 103ci engine because that's what my bike has in it. The mechanic I was talking with did not say anything to me about changing any of these items. Now after reading your post I'm starting to second quess his knowledge. I just want to do it right the first time and have all the horsepower and torque and dependability I can get. Any other thoughts or ideas you have would be great. Thanks once again for your time.

Thanks and Happy Holiday's

Ron

No, second guess MY knowledge!!! I seemed to have missed the "se2" part in your model designation. Ignore the reference's to the 95ci (I'll edit them out so as not to confuse others reading these posts). I try to be accurate on these postings but sometimes it's late after a long day. My apologies for the confusion to you and your tech. Thank you for the spring purchase!
You'll still want to get your compression up, but decking your heads will be the best approach, along with the .030 gasket. Your head guy will be able to calculate the amount of decking required for the falt top pistons already installed. We are doing two 103 builds virtually identical to what you are doing (i.e., 251 cams, mild head porting). Both will be getting larger throttle bodies. You may want to talk to your tech about a larger throttle body as this will become the main restriction after the other work, due to motor size. Last we like the SE "Perfect Fit" pushrods as these run quiter than the quick installs, but the correct lenghts will have to be confirmed for the cam base circle and head/gasket decking (stock length may turn out to be correct since decking may cancel the reduced cam base circle). Thanks Again, Mike
