After months of research ... and some well headed advice from you, I am scheduling my 113" upgrade. While making my list of specified upgrades this past weekend, It dawned on me that I still have my stock heads. Would I be better off sending them out to be re-worked with a porting job somewhere ... or keeping the Screaming Eagle HTCC CNC Ported heads? IF porting job is suggested ... whom have you had the best results from? The build is geared twords max torque in the 2500-5000 range as opposed to peak HP at 6500 RPM (Although both would be nice).
I know you recomended the T-Man 650 cam ... how are they for porting?
Any experience with cams from Bob Woods?
Thanks in advance

We can port the stock heads to match the CNC heads for around $1450.00 or outflow them for $2500.00 (Baisley Hybrid porting). Since you've already invested in the CNC's and this is a 113, I'd probably stay with them. Only thing to look at is matching pistons to the heads. The stock heads allow more latitude since we can cause them to match the pistons of choice, the CNC's do not allow as much room but generaly work out OK when used with the 113 forged SE pistons. I'm a close and old friend of Dan Baisley and typically recommend and use them for 99% of our head work. He is recognized as one of the best in the H-D world. I also know TR and he does very good work. It may be more a matter of locale. We've been using Wood cams since '93 (I think) and were among the first to do so. Very good stuff and compares favoribly with the T-Man cams (actually the T-Man cams are a newer offering).

I was very interested to read the question as I have the 113" kit in my '01 Dyna with the SE CNC HTCC ported heads which I ran the year before with the 103" kit. The 113" pistons look nothing like the 103" pistons; the 113" pistons are simple flat tops with cut outs for the valves. The 103" pistons for the SE CNC HTCC ported heads have a unique shape; much more exotic looking than the 4.060" bore pistons I am using now.
I have a Wood 408G cam, balanced flywheels, your case breather, and a Wood modified 51mm CV carb. The bike runs nicely and seems OK for power, not great but OK; best in the 60 to 90 mph range. I wonder if the heads I have are really that good with these flat top pistons.
I kind of ran out of money at the end last year. I saw a set of heads done by a guy named Dewey listed on the internet, used; lots cheaper than new; but they were set up for a 4.250" bore and the 113" bore is only 4.060". Would that be too much of a mismatch? There is also the labor cost involved checking them for available valve lift and so on; which might make them cost ineffective.
I talked to Baisley last year and they were very nice; they almost gave me the idea stock heads modified by them would be the best way to go; better than reworking the CNC HTCC Ported heads I have now; but money again. I do have three sets of stock heads on my shelves so it would be just the porting.
Long post; thanks in advance.

If the Dewey heads where setup to use flat top pistons, the machining for the 113 forged pistons is not a problem. Dan has a CNC program to do so, so long as your target compression ratio is not much above 10.5. An uppcoming magazine article in American Iron will show what can be done with stock head castings. I believe you just may be running out of cam, with the 408, for the motor size. Not enough duration to support higher rpm's. But as you go there (higher duration) you'll start to sacrifice torque down low.
Thanks, Mike
