Hi Mike,

My question has to do with the oil spring history. I often time here it referred to as the "Bailey" spring. In the part number (LMR-00x) it clearly indicates being a Latus part. I called LatusHD and spoke with someone there and they suggested that it was a Latus part. In the past I have mentioned this information but have been recently "corrected" that Bailsey either helped with or designed the spring. I was hoping you could clarify the history for me as well as others.

Thank you for your time.

Dan Baisley is a close and dear friend of mine and we have worked together on many projects over the years and I'm flattered that the spring has become known as the "Baisley" spring! The twin cam spring is, however, a totally Latus Motors developed product and your are correct in that the LMR stands for "Latus Motors Racing". Having used shims or stretched springs in the past, we (myself at Latus) decided a replacement spring would be better, Dan also expressed enterest in a similar product. I sent several stock H-D springs to a spring manufacturing company in Wilsonville, Or. (recommended by Dan) and had them profiled (dyno'd). I decided (for no real emperical reasons) that a 15% pressure increase would suffice to accomplish our goals. Based on the profiling results, physical requirements (fit, diameter, coil bind, travel, finish, etc.) and the desired pressure increase, our manufacturers' engineering department designed the spring. We (Latus Motors) have that spring manufactured by the above company and it is a proprietory design exclusive to Latus Motors. Our goal, by the way, was to provide increased pressure to the hydraulic lifters when using higher than stock valve spring pressures required of high lift cams and rpm's. This is entended to help reduce valve train noises in these applications (and so far with over 3000 installed, it seems to be working). The spring was also a test product for establishing systems and methods within Latus Motors for future products (currently going to full production with our throttlebody design).
Dan and his father Wes did a lot of research into oiling systems on Shovels and EV's and designed the oil pump speed up gears to help accomplish similar goals plus better scavenging (my independant shop at the time {Stegmann Performance} helped a little with the field testing and dyno work that went into those designs). We do sell our spring to dealers and distributors and Baisley Hi-Performance is our largest purchaser and hence largest retailer and advocate for the spring. Since most people and many dealers are purchasing their springs from Baisley, it has become associated with them. I cannot think of anyother name I would be more proud of to have identified with our product than Baisley hi-Performance.
Thank you for the chance to help clarify. Mike
