Mike,

Just bought a new temp gun Harbor freight. Great buy. Thought I would check my cylinder head temps. Would like to know what to expect when I check. What is the maximum cylinder head temp. I should read. I will aim the light just a little to the side of the spark plug between it and the head bolt. I am running 11.1 compression.

A friend told me when he measured his, his rear cylinder head was always 8 to 10 degress hotter then the front cylinder head. Is that normal?

regards

Kevin

You'll see typ 300-400 at that point on a hot motor after several dyno pulls, with 450 being shut down time (heat management taking over). 250 is the temp H-D uses for TC data readings, but this is farther from the spark plug so the cylinder temp sensor tends to read lower. A ten degree difference is perfectly normal since the rear cyl. typ. does not get the air the front gets. It also gets all the hot air off the front when running down the road.
Thanks, Mike

Mike,

Thank you for the info. I understand what you mean. Measuring the temp between the plug and head bolt I averaged 305 to 314 degress on the rear cylinder and 295 to 305 on the front. (96 degree outside temps high humidity. oil return temps 220-223) Farther away from the plug, temps dropped 20 degrees. This was done with real world driving not a Dyno pull(s). Sounds like I am in the ball park.

Thanks for the information.
