Mike,
I laid the 2004 Deuce down on left side and hit a truck hard enough to shear the forward brake controls from the frame. The build has about 4500 miles on it with no problems. I changed to the D&D Fat Cat and SERT and had it dyno tuned on 4/6/06. I put a couple hundred miles on it around Phoenix and would open it up on occasion. I was really happy with the power and torque. I noticed I was losing some power on accel and noticed the temp was at 300, 50% higher than normal. I stopped and oil was down 2 qt. I added 2 qts and power was still about stock and temp still 300%. There was no oil leaking, no rattles and no smoke out the pipe. (At this point I should have been getting smart)
I was in the vicinity where the build was done and went by but they were closed. I thought I could get the bike home and stopped to let it cool to 250%. The oil was down another qt. Still no leaks and no oil burning. (I should have really started to get smart here but didn't) I was on the freeway and twisted the throttle and nothing, oil blew out all over me, the bike, the hot pipe. Lots of smoke now. Naturally I stopped, duh. The bike started right up, there were no rattles, there was no smoke out the pipe. Trailered the bike from there.
The scavenge part of pump froze up, don't know yet what they found in it or the case when flushuing. The crank was twisted .007
I have a new crank that is welded, Feuling oil pump, lifters and cam plate going in. Just found out the jugs are scored so it's a bore and +.010 pistons. I am hearing about some kind of Drag Specialities bracket to prevent the crank from doing the same thing. Can't seem to find one.
Question: Could the crash have anything to do with the engine failure? Could starting the dyno runs at 1750 cause a crank failure?
