Mike,

As I am reassembling the bottom end (installed cams into stock HD camplate Latus#2 spring) on the bike I am trying to re-check all clearances etc. When measuring the rocker arm end play in the SE rocker supports I got the following readings.

Rear Exhaust .010 Rear Intake .008 Front Exhaust .009 Front Intake .008

Are those reasonable for my Woods 9FG 650 lift cam or should I shim to get closer tolerances. My books show that up to .025 is ok. However, I am trying to quite the top end down as much as possible. I think S&S states .003 to .005.

If I should shim does HD make shims I can use? If so what sizes do they come in and what should I try for in clearances so the oil can still do its job.

HD shim Part (s) ?

Note: I was talking to Bobby Wood today and he said Andrews makes him a Z and a ZZ oversized pinion gear for gear drive cams. He also has two oversized internal cam gears. Just an FYI.

You can use shovel head rocker shaft spacers available from V-Twin (not available from H-D). They are .005 (pn 12-0704), .007 (12-0710) and .015 (12-0715). Install them on the pushrod end since the rockers tend to thrust toward the valve side. The .005's are thin enough that we've seen them deform over time and peel out. To really do it correctly, I would use the .015 shims and machine the rocker supports to provide the correct clearance with them. .003-.005 is good erring on the .005 side, .007-.010 may be better to account for support distortion when the bolts are tightened. It's possible you'll see a slight increase in oil pressure once done.
I've heard of the ZZ gears and have yet to get some, thanks for the advise on these!
