Hi all ........ I would like to boost the power on my fatboy a bit . first off it is just a pub crawler , not more than half a tank away from home, second i am running 100 octane exclusively in it (Just because I can)so detonation should not be an issue... anyway this is the list of parts I am thinking for my budget that will give it some grunt ..is it a decent combo?? suggestions?? TIA

SE HTCC cyl heads cnc ported
SE pro 3-7/8" bore HTCC pistons
SE big bore cyl
SE 251 cam
Comp release's
Adj pushrod kit
Vance & Hines big shot staggered

Yes, this would be a very good combo! The 257 cams may be more appropriate but with the 100 oct the 251's will be fine. the baffles in the VH pipes may need to be modified for best peak numbers but will be louder and have more of a torque dip around 2500 rpm. The 51 cv will give best peak numbers but the 44 cv will give slightly better torque from 2-4k with less hp. The Mikuni 45 would be another very good choice. Use the SE exhaust gaskets and SE MLS head gaskets. An adjustable ignition module will be required (32704-01). The one piece pushrods (18400-03) will run quiter but not allow the servicability of quick installs. With a cam change we strongly recommend new chains, tensioners and tappets ("B" style) if your bike has more than 7k miles. If your bike has the "A" oil pump then upgrading to the "B" is recommended and will add hp via better scavenging of crankcase oil for less drag. You may still have plastic breathers in the heads and these must be upgraded to the metal (17650-02, 2 req.). I like to add the new chrome short head bolts just for looks (16480-92A). Note that the new CNC heads have 1.730 intake ports and the intake manifold should be ground to match (not a must do but would help). Last, we have an oil pressure spring (LMR-002) that is installed with all cam installs. It raises oil pressure by 15% to help reduce engine noise with the higher valve spring pressures used in these heads.
If these things kicks you out of your budget, take a look at our "251" kits and the dyno charts for them on this web site. We get similar results for approx. $950.00 less.
Thank you for using this forum, Mike

Thank for the Quik and and very informative reply Mike!!

I have not purchased the Vance & Hines yet but I am leaning strongly toward it due to sound, looks and hope not to have a big torque loss with the powerchamber .please correct me if I am Wrong as I am open to other suggestions what else to try other than a 2into1 ,cause the wifey thinks they are ugly :o What type of mods would need to be done to the V&H...(really do not want to lose torque)
still have not decided on which carb..
SE ign module yes I will add that
.. the bike only has 2k miles :( so I guess the chains and stock lifters should be ok?
I have absoultely no idea which oil pump is installed ,whatever came stock on a 01 88B motor I guess, (I purchased the bike new). How do you tell which pump?.
I have the metal breathers as the SE carb jet kit/aircleaner is installed....
thought I would have the intake port matched as you suggested rather than purchase one (at least until I figure out which carb, which may change things)
your oil pressure spring sounds like a great idea and a must have......TIA

We shorten (cut) the baffle in the VH. This makes more hp and peak tq but does produce a torque dip btween 2-3k. If you are looking for mostly torque we may not want to do this mod. The DD fatcat, when used with their performance muffler, has given us the best numbers. It too has a torque dip but it is typ. right at 2k and recovers strongly with great numbers from there on.
with 2k miles we would say the stock lifters, chains and tensioners are fine. As usual, there is a "however", the lifters have since been updated to a "B" version and run quiter than the "A"'s currently in your bike. It might be worth the $130.00 investment to have a quiter motor. I just tore down an 01 FLHR yesterday and found an "A" oil pump even though this bike had the rear cam bearing upgrade (you'll automatically get this with the cam install). It's possible for 01's to have either the "A" or "B" pump and we just do not know until we tear down. The "B" pump add's $190.00 but is really worth it. The metal breathers I'm referring to are in the heads under the rocker covers. You should have plastic in there and will have to be changed to metal (the plastic's are no longer included in the gasket kits), this add's $20.00.
Thanks Again, Mike

DO you see any need for roller rockers on this build ? Thanks..

The roller rockers are not required but would be a nice upgrade for any engine combo. We normally start to strongly recommend them when valve lifts exceed .650. SE's are good and Baisley offers them with corrected geometry for really high lifts.
Thanks, Mike
