View Full Version : Boss95
Mike, I have a 04 Ultra. I would like to upgrade the engine and the Boss95 upgrade looks like it might fill the bill for me. However, I do have a couple of questions. I had installed before I picked up the bike the Screaming Eagle air filter, had it re-mapped and added Bub Sleeper slip on exhausts.
Your package states that required dyno tuning is additional and varies with type of tuning device. What tuning device would be recommended and what would the price be?
Your package also states, requires speperate purchase of Areo Kit if not already installed. What is an Areo Kit and what is the price?
Are the Bub Sleepers adequit or would you recommend a different exhaust?
One of the things that I am hearing as I investigate different builds is that Screaming Eagle cams come on late and there are cams, such as Andrews, that come on earlier. Any truth to this?
Last questions is, is there a benefit to going to a 98" instead of the 95"? What type of price difference would there be?
Man, I fell asleep on returning this reply. I hope I'm not to late to answer. My apoliogies.
Any kit for which there is not an H-D calibration will require Race Tuner ($459.95), Power Commander ($359.95) or something similar. We do not include them in the price since many already may have something installed. H-D reflash cartridges do not exist for these packages, which may be what was used to "re-map" your bike originally. The S.E. Race Tuner (SERT) is always our first choice but if a Power Commander is already installed we would utulize that. SERT maps are $250.00 (we do each cylinder seperately) and Pwr Cmdr maps are $150.00 (V-rods are $50.00 more for each). With Pwr Cmdr we always recommend the H-D reflash cartridge cal. that most closely matches your combo. ($149.95), in addition to the custom map. Other aftermarket devices are quoted on a case by case basis.
Our "Aero" packages are the Screaming Eagle air cleaners with S.E. exhaust, your OK here.
We do not have test data on the "Sleepers" but would guess that, as a quiter system, you would be at the low end of the horsepower number (or lower) but the torque number should be very good and very broad, flat shape (which is what touring bikes like). I would try the Sleepers and see how they work. Only problem is, if the exhaust is changed later, a new map would be required
(another $150-250).
The cam chioce is a function of compression ratio and whether we want low end torque or high end horsepower. Lighter bikes can benefit from horspower cams but touring bikes (how they are used and the added weight) typically work better when torque is concentrated on. If the SE 211 or 251 cams are used with 9.5 or lower compression ratios the bike will be lazy from 2.5-3.5K rpm due to lack of cylinder pressure (and will not make as much horsepower up high). This is why our kits using these cams require the 10.25 pistons. There are aftermarket cams that do have earlier timing thus increasing cylinder pressure and torque, the Knightprowler (Wood Automotive) TW6/H is a very good example. We have to watch the detonation thresshold as we increase cylinder pressure and this limits how narrow the cam can be. The "Boss" 251 kit was specifically designed to allow the use of other cams such as this. Remember the exhaust plays as much, if not a larger, role on the shape of the torque curve.
At the risk of showing my ignorance, I believe the 98 kits use Nikasil cylinders from Millinium or Air Cooled Cylinders (maybe marketed under other names). Axtell Sales offers a 97 kit that does not require case boring. The reason for this is the feeling that achieving 98, with bolt on cylinders, leaves the cyinder spigots too thin with the possibility of braking off from vibration and harmonics. Axtell's 97 kit is $905.00 (I belive th 98 kit would be similar) compared to H-D's big bore kit with forged pistons at $579.99 (less with cast pistons). The 97/98 kits should produce approx. 3-5 more HP and TQ than the 95 kit (guess!!!).
We will soon have our dyno library on this web site so that you can do your own analysis, it will be the largest (that I know of) in the industry.
Regards, Mike
