View Full Version : California Dyna Exhaust
HI Mike,
My neighbor won a 05 Dyna Superglide custom in a raffle (lucky dog) but it is a California Model. He wants to put on screaming ealge slip ons but your website shows 49 state use only and not on CA bikes. Where are the cat coverters on this bike and what is he looking at if I send him to Latus as far as what the bike will need to covert to use slip ons, air cleaners, etc. Thanks.
Congratulations to your neighbor!!! The mufflers used on Ca. (and most '06) bikes are "catalyst" type but are not a "converter". The use of non-catalyst mufflers would not be allowed if the bike were to be used (registered) in California. Our "Aero" kit would be fine here in Oregon and would fit onto your neighbor's bike with no problem. We use the 49 state "legal" mufflers for EFI models that use ECM reflash cartridges. If other mufflers or systems are used then Race Tuner should be used. Carbureted bikes can use other systems and for these we use the Screaming Eagle Pro II mufflers in our kits. The Pro II's give excellent overall performance without being obscenely loud. The "Aero" kits were designed to be a cost effective, easy and conveniant option but are not the only option availible. There are as many combinations available as an owners imagination may concieve. Our Chrome or Perfomance specialists would be happy to discuss any of these. For your reference the Dyna Aero-Carbureted kit retails at $583.35 installed and the EFI $722.35.

What are the inplications of putting on headers and straight pipes on the twincam without reflashing the ECU or using a power commander?
There is a very real risk of motor damage due to overheating, scuffing, lean AFR under certain load/throttle conditions, detonation, burned valves, coughing, decel backfire and general drivability issues. These will be even more extreme if drag pipes ("straight pipes") are used and run for extended times (traveling/freeway). An ECM reflash is only appropriate if the combination of parts used exactly matches those for which the Reflash calibration was designed. If the combination differs, then an ADDITIONAL tuning device is required. In this case the calibration is $149.95 (we always recommend the most appropriate reflash cal with Pwr Cmndrs), Power Commander $359.95 and custom map $150.00 for a total of $659.90. Race Tuner is $459.95 and the custom map for this is $250.00 for a total of $709.95. A difference of $50.05. Race Tuner affords much more tunability, does not stay attached to the bike (also, Pwr Cmndrs are difficult to mount on Dyna's), does not require different reflash cals when changes are made to the bike (mapping does need to change, true of Pwr Cmdr also), able to address other issues (cold start, idle rpm, rev limits and others) and will not cause false engine codes.
